T h e   s h o w   m u s t   g o   o n

I love the theater and everybody connected with it, form actor to stagehand. I believe however that this business of "the show must go on" has been done a bit as it concerns the acting profession.…ellipsis…But i do not applaud actors alone. I applaud people. All People. Life itself. Everybody goes out on the "stage" with sorrow in his heart. For everybody, the show must go on. How many workingmen have come home from the cemetery where they had just buried a child and sat right down at their workbenches, machines, and lathes? How many house-wise pitch in to get the children ready for school…The Sow Must Go On. Not only for actors, but for all of us. We dare not stop " the show " for a single moment.

나는 연극과 배우에서부터 무대 담당자까지 연극과 관련된 모든 사람을 사랑한다. 하지만 나는 "쇼는 계속되어야 한다."에 관한 이 일이 연기하는 직업과 관련될 때만이 아니라 생각한다. …중략…나는 일어나서 박수갈채를 보낸다. 하지만 나는 배우들에게만 손뼉을 치는 것은 아니다. 모든 사람들. 아니 인생 그 자체에 박수를 보내는 것이다. 모든 사람은 그들 가슴속에 슬픔을 가지고 있으면서 '무대' 위로 오른다. 모든 사람들을 위하여 쇼는 계속되어야 한다. 얼마나 많은 노동자들이 아이를 묘지에 묻고 집에돌아와서는 곧장 작업대로, 기계로, 선반으로 다시 가서 앉았던가? 얼마나 많은 엄마들이 등골이 부서질 것 같으면서도. 자기만의 슬픔을 가지고서…쇼는 계속되어야 한다. 배우들을 위해서만이 아니라. 우리 모두를 위해서. 우리는 단 한순간도 쇼를 감히 멈출 수는 없다.
